Here is one reason why it might not be wise to just let anti-gun claims about private gun sales go unchallenged.
As many of you know Washington State enacted a law in 2014, which is similar to California’s law. All private sales must go through a background check with a licensed FFL dealer. Californians have had endure this hardship and extra expense for years, but it appears the good law abiding gun owners in Washington want none of it. To note, the average cost to walk into a dealer and process a background check is between $50 and $70 depending on where you live.
“Irish Democracy” — the silent, dogged resistance, withdrawal, and truculence of millions of ordinary people – not by revolutionary vanguards or rioting mobs.
According to an article at the Truth About Guns blog, only 2% of gun sales performed in the state of Washington last year accounted for private transfers. Of course we remember when our last president touted the widely circulated Harvard University report claiming 40% of all gun sales were private. The Anti-Gun industrial complex seized on the opportunity to wave the bloody pages, as it were, and claim we must have universal background checks on all sales period. It was only common sense after all. For the rest of the country wondering what common sense gun laws look like for the anti-gun industrial complex, head on over and check out California’s Gun Laws.
We know across the nation private sales have continued at a steady pace, and new sales of firearms have hit record setting levels month after month with almost no sign of slowing down. In fact with the crazy laws in California going into effect, California gun owners purchased a whopping 1 million guns in 2016. Now that Trump was elected president, we see the potential for a more normal market space as Trump promises more gun liberties. But how does one go from 40% to 2% in one year. This seemingly overnight shift in sales dynamic is too far of an outlier.
Various excuses have been given in regards to why. The anti-gun agitprop must continue unabated as Bloomberg and his ilk continue to spend millions at the local level to restrict law abiding citizens from access to firearms. The simplest explanation is more than likely the truth in the matter. Washington citizens just aren’t following the law. We know this sounds outlandish, but the proof is right there. The simple act of reliance has left Washington legislators with egg on their faces. Yes the good people of Washington have decided to follow the ideals of an Irish Democracy. No riots, no looting, or otherwise inflammatory behavior, just pure resistance. It also appears that the people have the backing of law enforcement who refuse to enforce the new law.
I am unable to speak for all of those in California; however I can say that like New York, Colorado, and Connecticut, we will simply not comply. Try as they might with fists shaking, the people will speak volumes through their non action. The simple fact is law enforcement will stand by the people. The politicians will be left waging fingers and throwing money at propping up AstroTurf outrage by well-paid actors.
